Raquel Canuto owns Hybrid Jiujitsu in Las Vegas, Nevada with her partner Renato Canuto. The black belt world champion duo opened their academy in August 2021 as a venture that combines both of their visions and styles under one roof.

When did you first start martial arts? How did you get started?

My father was a lifelong martial artist so I grew up practicing martial arts but it wasn’t until I was a sophomore that I began taking it seriously. This is when I went out for the high school wrestling team and realized quickly this was what I wanted to do for my life.

When did you open your school? How did you know you wanted to do this?

My husband and I partnered with Venum on a project back in 2019. They opened a gym where we started our first program. After 2 years the gym closed so we opened Hybrid Jiujitsu in August of 2021. I knew for about 10 years before then that I wanted to someday have a gym of my own. I was fighting MMA at the time but prioritized doing Jiujitsu with the idea that one day when I was done fighting MMA I would be a black belt and have something to show for my career. At the time I didn’t know it would be a Jiujitsu school but that was the plan that life had for me. I still believe someday we will be a full-service school offering striking and other disciplines as well.

What is your proudest achievement so far?

My proudest achievement is Hybrid Jiujitsu. What we have been able to collectively create is so special and trumps any titles I have captured. We are changing lives daily and that means so much to me.

What are you shooting for next? Any big goals on or off the mat?

I am turning 34 this year so I am nearing the end of my career with plans to retire within the year so I can start a family. I am going to be doing some super fights on UFC Fight Pass, ADCC trials and the World Championships until then. I would like to make it to the ADCC World Championships! That’s the goal right now.

Give us a fun fact about yourself outside of training!

I am one of the hardest-working people I’ve ever known but really enjoy being lazy as well. Lounging with my dogs on the couch listening to or reading a book is my favorite thing to do.
