2025 Lunar New Year | The Year of the Snake
What is the Lunar New Year?
The Lunar New Year, also known as the Chinese New Year, marks the beginning of the lunar calendar. The Lunar calendar follows the lunar phases rather than the Gregorian calendar (January-December calendar used in most of the world). China most notably and enthusastically celebrates it, as well as other Asian countries such as Vietnam, South Korea, and Singapore. Japan used to officially celebrate the Lunar New Year, but shifted to the Gregorian calendar in 1873.
What is the Chinese Zodiac?
The Chinese Zodiac is a 12-year cycle consisting of a different animal sign for each year. The animals go in order as: the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the sheep (or goat), the monkey, the rooster, the dog, and the pig. Each animal is associated with and expected to have a variety of personality traits, similar to Greek astrology signs. Those who celebrate the Chinese New Year associate the personality traits to those born in the animal’s year.

What does the Year of the Snake Mean for Small Business?
The Snake represents smart decisions and meticulous planning. In the Year of the Snake, you should focus on making and saving money. It is important to re-invest in your business but also know to put some money away for any scenario that might arise.
The Year of the Snake is also a time to fixate on steady, evenly paced progress. Fortunately, the discipline learned through martial arts can assist with this thoughtful approach. Although the general theme is to be contemplative and measured in your business efforts, it certainly doesn’t mean you can’t make big moves – just plan them out well! In fact, there have been some major inventions that rolled out during past Years of the Snake, including the compact disc (1977) and the iPod (2001). Maybe you’ve been considering launching a new program at your school, spearheading a rebrand, or another large venture. As long as you’ve done your homework and assessed the opportunity properly, this might be the perfect year to take the plunge.
In summary: as you manage your business in 2025, make sure you think ahead, analyze and prepare so you can strike like a snake. Stay focused, diligent, and patient, but pounce when the opportunity arises.
